HomeGuide's tonnage bands are useful cost anchors, but ENERGY STAR and AHRI both emphasize proper system sizing and matching. Climate, windows, insulation, air leakage and ducts affect the real capacity requirement.

AHRI's current homeowner guidance says a split AC's indoor and outdoor units must be properly matched to achieve the expected efficiency and longevity. Its certification directory identifies the certified combination through a unique reference number.
