THE REAL COST MODEL
Reaching and restoring the pipe can cost more than the pipe
Plumbing estimates become expensive when a failed line sits behind finished walls, beneath a slab, deep in a yard or below hardscape. The replacement material may be straightforward while access requires demolition, excavation or extensive finish restoration.
That is why linear-foot benchmarks need context. Ten accessible feet in an unfinished space and ten buried feet under a driveway are not economically equivalent. A useful estimate identifies length and diameter, but also depth, route, surface conditions, access points and what must be rebuilt afterward.
For whole-house work, fixture count and routing can matter as much as floor area. For buried lines, depth and surface restoration often become stronger cost drivers.

METHOD BEFORE PRICE
Trenchless is an option, not a universal upgrade
Trenchless methods can reduce surface disruption, but suitability depends on the existing pipe, alignment, access and the failure being corrected. Lining needs a host pipe that can accept the system; bursting needs a workable route for equipment and new pipe.
Open excavation can still be rational when there is collapse, alignment trouble, inaccessible connections or site conditions that make trenchless work unsuitable. A proposal should state method, segment, preparation, access pits, reconnections, testing and restoration.
REPIPE DECISIONS
Material matters, but routing and finish work often decide the total
PEX and copper comparisons attract high-intent searches because material choice is visible. In practice, wall openings, routing, occupied-room protection, fixture reconnection and patching can move the budget as much as raw material.
For slab leaks, the core decision may be direct repair versus rerouting rather than the price of one leak. Access, recurrence risk and the condition of the broader piping system matter to the long-term comparison.
