Normalize the plumbing scope before looking at the price

In ordinary residential usage, a whole-house repipe usually means replacing the home's pressurized water-supply piping. It does not automatically mean replacing drain, waste and vent piping, changing every fixture, replacing the buried service line from the street, or restoring every wall to finished paint.

A linear multiplier would imply that a 2,500-square-foot copper repipe is just 25% more expensive than a 2,000-square-foot copper repipe, regardless of bathrooms, floors, wet-wall clustering or access. The source data does not justify that precision.

Angi estimates labor at roughly 70% of a whole-house repipe

Angi's 2026 guide says labor represents about70% of the total repipe bill, around $5,250 on its $7,500 average project. That explains why comparing a $0.40–$2 PEX material price with a $2–$8 copper material price does not predict the entire contractor difference.

Existing houses cannot move kitchens and bathrooms just because the walls are open, but a repipe contractor can still make routing choices. If two quotes use different routes, the shorter-looking one is not automatically better: pipe sizing, pressure, insulation, protection, serviceability and local code all matter.

The repipe scope includes more than tubing: fittings and wetted plumbing components matter too

EPA's current Safe Drinking Water Act guidance defines “lead free” for pipes, pipe fittings, plumbing fittings and fixtures as a weighted average of no more than 0.25% lead across wetted surfaces, with 0.2% for solder and flux.
