The National Wood Flooring Association's current installation guidelines are explicit: after a leak or flood, the first repair step is to identify and eliminate the moisture source. It is a project example, not a promise that every cupped floor will recover, but it illustrates why sanding too early can destroy salvageable material.

Water can affect the flooring, adhesive bond and substrate. Removing isolated boards without damaging surrounding material can take more labor, and new adhesive must be compatible with the substrate and flooring system.
A damaged board in the middle of a floating floor is not always replaced the same way as one nailed directly over plywood. Product construction, locking profile and manufacturer repair methods matter.
